The Moss family played an important part in Billings’ history. Preston B. Moss was one of the town’s early leading citizens. He came to Billings around 1892 and made his fortune in banking. He also owned the Billings Utility Company and for a number of years, the Billings Gazette. Mattie was Martha Woodson Moss, (1863 Parks, MO – 1951 Billings, MT). In 1903 the Moss Mansion on Division Street was designed for the family by the same architect that designed New York’s Waldorf Astoria. Their daughter Melville lived in the house until her death in 1984; it is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
