Description: Up for sale is a true antique 19th century American folk art oil painting. Depicted is a young, black haired girl in a white/blue lace outfit most likely posed in her home. She is shown petting a cat with her left hand and holding a doll with the other, surrounded by a patterned floor & fringed curtains. The background scenery appears mountainous and there is a tree right behind the pictured balcony or window. Signed in the lower right corner: “Nell Waters.” This is just my best guess, as the signature is slightly faded but I’m about 85% confident in my interpretation. I do not see a framers label or marking anywhere. The wood frame appears to have been originally dipped in some sort of covering that is now cracking & chipped. There is an off-white inlay to the frame. The backside has writing on it. There are two words, separated by a dash, and 1849 at the end. It looks like the second word might say “Weston” or “Westin,” but I can’t make it out. Frame measures 25.75” tall & 17.75” wide Artwork is approximately 20” tall & 12” wide Some minor chipping of the paint in various areas. Discoloration on the areas painted white. Excellent shape considering its age. From a smoke & pet free home. Will be professionally packaged.
