Description: This is a antique Songye carved wooden male power statue also called a Nkisi / Nkishi figure which was collected from the Congo. This African Nkisi power figure is adorned with two animal hide arm bracelets, thin string necklace and a woven jungle plant fiber skirt. These Congolese Songye power fetish figures were believed to gained their power not from the wood carver but from the Nganga, or spiritual leader who activated them. Their carving was considered secondary to their power. Small Nkisi were for individual families and larger Nkisi were owned owned by and served the community - often the larger statutes were too powerful to touch so they were moved with long sticks. Although protective, these are confrontational objects, with a warrior's attitude.This Songye power figure was collected in the Congo, Africa and was made by the African Songye People. This Songye made wood carving is in great rustic antique condition with a lot of wear to the base and a hole carved in the wood on the top of the head and some cracks. Also, wear in the form of some holes to the raffia skirt. This African statue would make a fine addition to any African art collection. This African fetish figure measures 20.50 inches tall by 8 inches wide with a circumference around the base of 19 inches and this statue weighs 5 pounds and 5 ounces.
