Sodalite was named by Thomas Thomson, a Scottish chemist, because of its high sodium content. Sodalite became popular in the late 1800s after sizable deposits were discovered in Canada. Sodalite is the International Gemstone of Canada. Sodalite has had a variety of names, one of which is Princess Blue. While different stories exist about the Princess Blue name, it is probably honor of Princess Patricia of Connaught who used Sodalite in the décor of the Marlborough House in London, England. Other names encountered for Sodalite include Alomite, Bluestone, Canadian Bluestone, Canadian Lapis and Chameleon Sodalite. Although slightly similar to Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite is more of an ultramarine or royal blue and seldom has pyrite flecks which is characteristic of Lapis Lazuli. Colors: Sodalite comes in a wide range of colors which include royal blue, green, grey, pink and yellow mottled with dark and light (white) patches or veins.
