Description: A carte-de-visite portrait of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), the Scottish essayist and social historian, best known as a critic who condemned the evils of an industrial society. He was born at Ecclefechan in Dumfriesshire. In 1821 he passed through a spiritual crisis which later formed the subject of his work Sartor Resartus, describing his loss of Christian belief. His reputation was established with his French Revolution (1837). In 1826 he married Jane Baillee Welsh and they moved to her farm at Craigenputtock. After the death of his wife in 1866, he edited her letters and prepared his Reminiscences which shed an unfavourable light on his character and his neglect of her, for which he could not forgive himself. His house in Cheyne Row in London is now a museum. Photographed by Elliott and Fry of 55, Baker Street, London. Condition: please see scans. The print presents a number of small black flecks, including some in the area of the sitter’s face, and a small amount of fine spotting in the area of his lapel but is otherwise in fine condition. The mount is in excellent condition, with crisp edges and sharp corners. Dimensions: the dimensions of a standard carte-de-visite are approximately 4.1" by 2.5" (10.5 cm by 6.3 cm). All photographs are securely packaged using recycled cardboard. I go to the post office at least twice a week, usually on Monday and Thursday. If buying more than one photograph, please use the 'add to basket' function as this will combine postage. Orders over £100 will only be shipped via registered mail, which costs £5 extra.
