Franklin Township, Hunterdon County by Dan Campanelli (English) Hardcover Book

Description: Franklin Township, Hunterdon County by Dan Campanelli, Marty Campanelli, Lora Jones Franklin Township is a picturesque, rural oasis with rich soils and sparkling streams in the heart of Hunterdon County. Settled in the early 1700s by Quakers, it was touched by the Revolutionary War. Although the township was never occupied by British troops, New Jersey deputy quartermaster general Moore Furmans gristmill supplied flour for George Washingtons troops. Its beginnings as a farming and milling community remain at the heart of Franklin. Agriculture continues to hold cultural, historic, and scenic importance, and Hiram Deats, who manufactured a cast-iron plow patented by his father, John, in 1828, is still honored. Charming villages and hamlets boast 99 historic stone structures and 183 frame homes built before 1900. This idyllic area stands as proof that nature and bucolic farmland still hold sway in one of the nations most densely populated states. Authors of the book are Dan and Marty Campanelli, the well-known watercolorist and his wife, and Lora Jones, historian of Franklin Township, for Rural Awareness, Inc. The book is one of a series by Arcadia Publishing, the leading publisher of local and regional history in the United States. Rural Awareness is a non-profit civic group in Franklin dedicated to preserving the history and rural character of the township. The book features over 200 never-before-seen photographs dating from 1860 to 2009 from the private collections of current and former township families, and mentions 214 family names in the captions. One picture shows, but does not identify, 450 people attending the 1938 annual banquet of the Hunterdon County Poultry Association at Franklins school. More photographs were contributed by the Franklin Archives, Hunterdon County Historical Society, Hunterdon Democrat, Boy Scout Troop 108, and Quakertown Friends Meeting. The book also contains new information regarding historic sites, events and dates, correcting data published in earlier history books. Books may be purchased at the book signing party or by calling 908-735-4271. Other book signings will be held at the Franklin PTA Book Fair at the Quakertown Firehouse, Thursday, March 11, 7-9 p.m., and at the Route 12 Library on Saturday, April 17, at 2 p.m. All proceeds from the sale of Franklin Township, Hunterdon County will benefit Rural Awareness to fund community projects.Title: Franklin Township (Hunterdon) history comes to life in new book. Author: Walter OBrien Publisher: MyCentral Jersey.com Date: 3/21/10 Local history is living on in a new book for the "Images of America" series. "Images of America: Franklin Township, Hunterdon County" features more than 200 vintage photographs and nostalgic stories collected by Dan and Marty Campanelli and Lora Willis Jones. Proceeds from the books sales will benefit the nonprofit Rural Awareness, Inc. to fund community projects. Dan Campanelli is a recognized watercolor artist of historic buildings. His wife, Marty, is a graphic designer. "We discovered that Pittstown was the base for Moore Furman, who built his grist mill here and owned most of the town," Dan Campanelli said. "Its just a mile from our home -- we just gallop through history living here." Marty said they became friends with Jones when they moved to town five years ago. "When the book on Readington came out, we thought we could do one for Franklin and talked to Lora," Marty said. Jones is the township historian and a board member of the Hunterdon County Historical Society and Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission. At first the trio was concerned about finding enough photos to fill the book, but soon found themselves with pictures spread across a kitchen table, fighting over which to use. Jones said the authors wanted to convey the history by telling the stories behind the photographs with a sense of humor, but with purpose. "We wrote this book for two reasons," said Jones. "For people to appreciate the fact that we are still rural and agricultural and that we still have that heritage -- and to respect the people who all those years cared for the land and kept it for us."
