Description: Ketchikan is a city in and the borough seat of Ketchikan Gateway Borough of Alaska. It is the state’s southeastern most major settlement. Downtown Ketchikan is a National Historic District. Incorporated in 1900, it is the earliest extant incorporated city in Alaska, because consolidation or unification elsewhere in Alaska resulted in the dissolution of those communities’ city governments. Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedo Island, so named in 1793 by Captain George Vancouver. It is named after Ketchikan Creek, which flows through town, emptying into the Tongass Narrows a short distance southeast of its downtown. “Ketchikan” comes from the Tlingit name for the creek, “Kitschk-hin”, the meaning of which is unclear. It may mean “the River belonging to Kitschk”, other accounts claim it means “Thundering Wings of an Eagle”. Tongas Narrows is a Y-shaped channel, part of Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. The waterway forms part of the Alaska Marine Highway and as such, is used by charter, commercial fishing, and recreational vessels, as well as commercial freight barges and tanks, kayaks, and passenger ferries. It is defined as the water body that extends from the Revillagigedo Channel to the Gravina Island in Clarence Strait. It is shaped as a “Y”, split by Pennock Island. The eastern side of the narrows includes the cities of Saxman and Ketchikan. The channel runs in a generally northwest direction for about 14 miles. This “Albertype” postcard is a view of “Ketchikan Alaska, View Down Tongass Narrows”. I think that it is looking south with “Pencock Island” on the right but there is no compass legend, so it is only conjecture.
