Raheb Born 4/29/1933; Died 2/25/2017 - IGMA Fellow - Ms. Raheb was born in Iowa on April 29, 1933. Her family moved to California in 1941. She joined the Women's Army Corps in 1951 where she was schooled as a Still Photographer and Photo Lab Technician. Upon discharge, she worked for Drewry Photocolor Corp as an Executive Secretary, pitch-hitting in the lab and doing freelance artwork for point-of-sale material while attending college at ight. In 1965, she began working with Raheb Color Corp in the same capacity. When her husband sold the business in 1972, he added a studio to the house so that she could concentrate on her art. She returned to school, this time attending the West Valley College of Art. Ms. Raheb was introduced to miniatures in 1974 and was completely enchanted. She subsequently built her own dollbhouse from scratch. The dollhouse had an English orientation and was named "Poppins Cottage" after the Mary Poppins books. She wrote and illustrated its history in book form, from concept through construction, interweaving at the same time a fantasy around its inhabitants. The house was eventually sold, togehter with its little history. In 1975, she developed a line of miniature accessories under the registered trademark Mudlark Miniatures. It was quite innovative for those early years with four-color printed-litho boxed game board and cast metal pieces, a complete artist's line, working handpainted silk fans, etc. In a very short time, she was inundated with orders, she realized she would have to find a solution for keeping up or drown in the process. The business was ultimately sold to another miniaturist within 6 to 8 months of its inception. She decided to specialize. They had seen Queen Mary's Dollhouse on a 1972 trip to England and she was fascinated by its library. Being a bibliophile at heart with a large library of standard-sized books, including an extensive collection of both antiquarian and contemporary First Edition children's books, she decided to produce a library concept of "real" books in miniature of the world's great classic literature; audacious concept, buyt in her ignorance and zeal, she said she proceeded. She has been recognized as the world's most prolific publisher of miniature books in history! She was self-taught in this area and had destroyed her line twice in an effort to achieve the best possible. Those books from the earlier attempts now sell for more than ten times thir original published price. It was a period filled with trial, error and expense, but she gained knowledge and experience through perseverance. She had by then discovered tht miniature book collecting was a separate collecting field with a history reaching back to the 13th century. Ms. Raheb's books were sold world-wide to both serious dollhouse collectors and miniature book collectors. They are represented in the Rare Book Section of such notabe libraries as the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, State Library at Sacramento California, UCLA Library, Los Angeles, California, University of Minnesota Library, Des Moins Library, Iowa, and Occidental College Library, Special Collections Dept., Los Angeles, California, as well as representation in prominent personal collections throughout the world. Two of the books were ordered by the Westpoint Military Academy, Literature Dept., and went up in the space shuttle Discovery in August 1984 before returning to earth to repose in a glassed display case with other literary mementos in the department. She has lectured to academic and bibliophile groups about miniature books and their history. In 1993, she introduced the first "popup" book in miniature when Haunted House was released. It was out-of-print within five weeks of release.
