Description: Vintage Photo: 53rd NCB 1st Mac (53rd Naval Construction Battalion) Hospital Bougainville - shows an empty tent with some signs posted to nearby trees, doesn't seem to be much of a hospital! Nov. 1944 -1945 Size: 5" x 4" Condition: excellent The NCB 53rd 1st Mac also constructed a hospital on Bougainville during World War II. The hospital was built to support the medical needs of the Allied forces fighting in the area, including the treatment of wounded soldiers. The Seabees were responsible for all aspects of the hospital's construction, including building the main buildings, installing plumbing and electrical systems, and equipping the facility with medical equipment and supplies. The hospital played a critical role in providing medical care to the wounded and sick soldiers, and it was staffed by doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel from the United States Army Medical Corps and the Navy Medical Corps. The hospital remained operational throughout the remainder of the war and helped save many lives. The 53rd Naval Construction Battalion was heavily involved in the construction and development of military facilities and infrastructure on the island of Guam during World War II. Guam was a strategically important location in the Pacific theater, and the Seabees played a crucial role in building up the island's defenses and support facilities. The 53rd NCB arrived on Guam in early 1944, shortly after the island was retaken from Japanese forces by US troops. They were tasked with constructing airfields, barracks, hospitals, warehouses, and other facilities necessary to support the US military's operations in the Pacific. One of the major projects undertaken by the 53rd NCB on Guam was the construction of the Orote Field, which was a vital airfield used by US bombers and fighters during the war. The Seabees worked tirelessly to clear land, lay runways, and construct support buildings for the airfield, often working under difficult conditions. In addition to their construction work, the 53rd NCB also played a role in combat operations on Guam, providing support to US troops in battles against the Japanese. The Seabees were awarded a Navy Unit Commendation for their service on Guam.Today, many of the facilities and infrastructure built by the 53rd NCB and other Seabee units on Guam continue to be used by the US military, making an important contribution to US defense and security in the Pacific region.
