Description: NGC Drachm of Khusru II SASANIAN EMPIRE c. 591-628 AD Khusru or Khosrow II, the last powerful shahanshah of the Sassanian Empire, ruled from 590 to 628. His rise to power involved the expulsion of Bahram Chobin with Byzantine support after a period of rebellion against his father, Hormizd IV. Khosrow II's reign saw the onset of the Byzantine-Sassanian War, sparked by the murder of the Byzantine Emperor Maurice. Khosrow II's forces made significant gains, including the capture of Jerusalem and the True Cross, leading to tensions with Byzantine Christians. However, the tide turned when Heraclius rose to power in Constantinople and launched a counteroffensive, culminating in the defeat of Khosrow II's forces at Nineveh in 627. Facing internal dissent and betrayal, Khosrow II was overthrown and executed in 628, paving the way for a new ruler and ultimately the decline of the Sassanian Empire before the Islamic conquest.
