Nippon Era Vase I E & C CO Nile River Scene Raised Gold Hand Painted early 1900

Description: Nippon Era Cake Plate I E & C CO Hand Painted Roses early 1900 Japan Raised Gold A beautiful Hand Painted NIPPON ERA IE & C Co NILE RIVER SCENE VASE with extensive raised gold and tiny gold Moriage Beads and 7 Cartouches of GOLD Rose Sprays from Japan DESCRIPTION:  This handpainting is so precise.  There are seven cartouches each of which contains a rose spray designed with raised gold.  These are partitioned by extensive scroll work formed by raised gold lines and tiny gold beading.  This gold work extends all the way down from the rim.  The Nile River Scene is contained in a large cartouche and was a common scene to be painted in the early 1900's on many Nippon Pieces.  The large cartouche measures 3 1/2" by 5" and contains an exquisitely executed river scene with 2 sailboats including people on one of the boats.  The purple colors add interest to the sky and the water.CONDITION:  While this vase is classified as used, its condition is superb.  The only gold wear is very minor, age appropriate gold wear around the top rim.  We can find no chips, nicks, hairlines, rubbings, or repairs to this stunning piece.  It has a beautiful ring to it when you set it on the table.DIMENSIONS:  The vase has a maximum diameter of 4 1/4" and a height of 9 3/4".HISTORY/MARKS:  The period of operation for I.E. & C. Co. is 1885-1925.  Much of their product seems to have been exported to UK, Australia and New Zealand.  Reference authors speculate that they chose not to register their trademark for export to the United States, due to not wishing to compete with Morimura Brothers.  Also, the meticulous attention to detail and a predominance of Art Noveau styling suggests a beginning in the early Meiji period and ending with the Art Deco era.  After 1925, I.E. & C. Co. seems to be connected to Meito China in Nagoya, Japan.  David Spain, in Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, points out that the change of the word Nippon to the word Japan occurred as early as 1908 for exports to UK, Australia, and New Zealand.  On this piece, the mark is a circular wreath with "JAPAN" written inside the wreath above "I. E. & C. Co."  The "& C." is written inside a diamond with "CO" below the diamond.  (See the photo.)  Both the whiteness of the porcelain and the mark, because of the fancy script on the H in the word Hand, indicate this piece is from the early 1900's.  John Henley of the Noritake Collectors Guild has excellent articles about I.E. & C. Co. written in 2008.  We place this as circa early 1900's. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
