Description: An old oil on canvas painting, laid to a thin board, subject the northern San Francisco waterfront around Fort Mason, along with a panoramic view to Angel Island and Marin County beyond, unframed, 11" by 14", signed at lower right "Whited". There is only one listed artist with the last name, an (Elva) Viola Whited of Texas, which internet search reveals likely birth/death dates of 1902-1983. This could be our artist or could be someone totally unrelated. Written on the reverse of the card to which this was laid down in fairly modern times is "Fort Mason San Francisco from Gough and Washington Sts. ab. 1920". (That intersection would be in tony Pacific Heights, known for its expansive views). The blue marker seems to have been written over older writing which was in pencil and was more abbreviated. Perhaps there was something written on the canvas reverse before the canvas was glued to the board. There are nail holes in corners where artist evidently nailed it to something while painting it. Canvas is of a coarse weave. In any event we have a skillfully worked painting of a familiar and popular San Francisco view, by a talented hand; needs only a frame. From a collection of Northern California small paintings gathered by longtime San Francisco art dealer John Worley, who passed away a number of years ago.
