Description: Out of AfricaBLIXEN / DINESEN, Karen / Isak Publisher: PutnamLocation: London, EnglandDate: 1937Binding: Octavo, full-bound cloth with title to spine.Edition: FIRST EDITIONPrinting: 1st Printing Description:First Edition, First Printing of Out of Africa, Karen Blixen's best-loved work. With "First Published November 1937" on the copyright page, this copy precedes all other English-language editions, including the more common American first printing of 1938 published under Blixen's pseudonym, Isak Dinesen. A very nice example. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Basis for the film bearing the same name, directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. Condition:Binding tight with mild slant. Full-bound cloth boards present clean and unmarked but for a single pen-sized spot to rear. Light rubbing to corners and head and foot of spine. Toning to text blocks with light to moderate spotting, heaviest on fore-edge. Internally very nice. Mild spotting through title page and name, date and not penned to top front endpaper. Dust Jacket presents well with illustrated front remaining richly colored but for some browning extending across spine to rear panel. Light to moderate spotting to rear panel and creases with far less to flaps. Edges mostly clean with some very small chips and open and closed tears. Chipping to corners with a bit of loss. Same to head and foot of spine with slight more. Scruff less than one-quarter inch to front bottom panel near crease. Light to moderate wear to hinges. Flaps age-toned. Original Price of 12S. 6d. net Not Clipped. A very nice example.
