Description: Out of AfricaDINESEN / BLIXEN, Isak / Karen Publisher: PutnamLocation: London, EnglandDate: 1937 / 1938Binding: Octavo, full-bound cloth with title to spine.Edition: FIRST EDITIONPrinting: 2nd Printing (UK) Description:First Edition, Second Printing of Out of Africa, Karen Blixen's best-loved work, later published in the United States under her pseudonym, Isak Dinesen. A very nice example. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Basis for the film bearing the same name, directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. Condition:Binding tight and nearly square with only the slightest slant. Original full-bound cloth boards present well with only some light marks and shelf-wear. Moderate wear to hinges and rubbing to corners with a slight bend at top front fore-edge corner and a bit of loss to bottom corners extending slightly down edge. Age-toning to edges and hinges. Mild wear to head and foot of spine. Text blocks mostly clean with light spotting to top and just a bit to fore-edge. Internally mostly clean. Browning to front and rear endpapers with name neatly penned to top right corner of front. A very nice example.
