About the Book:John Whitmer's early history of Mormonism (1831-44) is simple and straightforward, reflecting a strong faith in Jesus' imminent return. To Whitmer, the coming Millennium was more important than any other consideration, including inconsistencies in the church's development. For example, after condemning "hireling priests," a revelation soon granted the founding prophet a parsonage and salary. Whitmer did not try to reconcile such contradictions. "From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer" is the earliest commissioned history of Mormonism, published in its entirety from the original manuscript. While Whitmer's belief and commitment to his faith never wavered, his trust in the church's leadership did. He was excommunicated in 1838, and thereafter, his writings took on a more antagonistic tone. John Whitmer is best known as a witness to Joseph Smith's gold plates. He served as a scribe for the Book of Mormon, editor of the Messenger and Advocate, and a member of the Missouri stake presidency. As an eyewitness to the most important events of the Restoration, his unflagging honesty lends unusual significance to his work. His narrative is a valuable resource for tracing early Mormon history, particularly the "Mormon War" in Missouri. Here Westgren faithfully reproduces the entire, original document, supplementing the text with annotation. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc. The photos and text in this listing are copyrighted.
