Description: TheMayor of Casterbridge in The Graphic London: The Graphic 1886 First English serial appearance. Good: Complete serial issue in The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, Volume 33. A large, heavy folio volume measuring 16 x 12 inches in 1/2 leather with marbled boards that show rubbing, bumped corners and spine ends, various scrapes, marks and small tears. Gilt titles to spine. Hinges cracked but holding, binding tight. Contents good-very good with minor browning, thumbing and foxing. Pages 27/28 of the Jan. 9th issue (not part of Hardy's story) is torn at the top margin, not impacting any text--see photo. This first English serial version of the novel was published in 20 weekly installments from January 2 to May 15, 1886, each with a striking engraved illustration by Robert Barnes. Hardy thought very highly of these illustrations and hung them at his home, Max Gate. (Oxford Reader's Companion to Hardy) This novel is generally seen as one of Hardy's great literary achievements. It is not common to find the serial version as offered here. In addition to Hardy's novel, this volume of The Graphic also extensively covers UK and world events, and includes other literary work. There are several large pull-out illustrations such as the one of Edinburgh in the photos, and some quaint color illustrations by Randolph Caldecott. 708 pp. + the 34 pp. Summer Number.
